World Music is the back bone of Maraire Enterprises. As a first generation American born in Zimbabwe our CEO has been around World Music his whole live. Maraire Enterprises believes that music is the language of the world. Music touches everyone whether they are Christian, Muslim or don’t believe in anything at all. So we work with acts that are capable of spreading cultural music from the African continent. Traditional music has always been a driving force in the World Music genre. African music has spread all over the world; whether it is Europe, Asia or even Australia, African music is loved and received by all types of people.
When we work with world Music artists we want to make sure that we respect their culture. We try to capture the artist’s story of how they got to America, what is going on in their country presently, and the social issues their people deal with. We work with artists that have a long history of teaching and performing African music. Most world music labels do not always try to build a personal relationship with artists. We do so by setting up workshops, and a question and answer portion at the end of each workshop. Maraire Enterprises artists are also available for artist-in-residencies, which can give schools of all grades including the College level, a chance to learn more about the culture.
In the future we plan to build up our artists in order to arrange a tour beginning in the United States and then the rest of the world. As the world becomes more internet friendly, Maraire Enterprises has started creating innovative ways of marketing and promoting our artists to the world. With all the social issues happening in some of the countries in Africa, we know that it is hard for most of the major labels to sell their artists music in their native countries. But, we want to make sure that our artists are always available in their home countries.
One of our goals for the future of World Music is to sign new original acts that really tell the story of their people. Whether is traditional or contemporary we want the voice of Africa to be heard. With our next release of Baba Maraire’s, "Wona Baba Maraire!", we know it will kick off our World Music division of with a bang. With the help of satellite television and radio, the internet, and the IPod, people are listening to diverse styles of music in their mp3 players. We just want to be a part of those play lists. We want to be a part of the MTV southern Africa experience, and grow those cultures and new innovative sound and expose them to the rest of the world. In the next ten years Maraire Enterprises wants to be a part of every continents mp3 experience.
